You will be so delighted with the ease of using your rice cooker, you will probably start using it almost every day. Rice is simple to make, hard to mess up, and rice cookers are the best appliances for speedy cleanup. You don’t need to waste your time watching the rice as it cooks, and in fact, your results will be better if you don’t take the lid off at all during the process.
After washing your rice carefully to remove all dirt and debris, place it in the cooker at a ratio of one cup rice to one cup water. Long grain and brown rice might require additional liquid – you can experiment and add more if necessary when testing new varieties. When choosing the quantity, bear in mind that rice expands, so one cup of dry, uncooked rice will result in approximately one and a half cups of finished rice. Be sure not to overfill your rice cooker, as the boiling water will spill out once it gets going.
The rice cooker will automatically monitor the contents of the pot. It will shut off when the water is gone and the internal temperature of the appliance goes up. Once it shuts off, allow your rice ten to fifteen minutes of resting time for best results before serving. Some rice cookers will keep your rice warm until you turn them off. If you don’t have this option, refrigerate leftovers right away for safety.
For stickier rice, soak approximately 30 minutes before cooking. You can make plain white rice, or you can mix in pre-soaked beans or wild rice for a delicious variation. Broccoli cooks nicely when you toss it in just a few minutes before your rice is completely cooked. You can also use your rice cooker to make hot cereals, such as oatmeal and cream of wheat.
